Wolftown: By Appointment Only
Operating a second hand store and “non-profit museum,” Marcus Wolf had a great impact on the cultural life of Missoula. A self-described “pack rat,” his obsessive collecting and organizing instincts resulted in a labyrinthine compound of buildings brimming with thousands of items that seduced artists, students, residents and tourists. With a creative and humorous spirit, Wolf produced tableaus using the enormous quantity of materials at his disposal.
He welcomed alike customers in search of unique items, students, and curious passers-by. The tours he offered of Wolftown were an inspiration to many local artists and photographers. After Wolf passed away on April 3, 2000, the documentation began surfacing; the extent was surprising and the content moving. Though by no means exhaustive, this exhibit presents images by several area photographers, including Patrick Clark, Carmen Hoover, Greg Karlson, Sherri Lee, Mark Ratledge, and Kurt Wilson. Large-scale prints by Lucy Capehart and relics from Wolftown are featured.
