Creative Flow: Visions of Water in the MAM Collections

Walter Hook was a prolific painter born and raised in Milltown. For many years he taught Art at the University of Montana, and he influenced younger artists as a supportive teacher. As a colleague and friend, his talent and productive energy invigorated the whole of the area arts community. The Missoula Art Museum cares for many artworks by Hook in its permanent art collection, ensuring that his legacy will remain here for the enjoyment of western Montanans.
In preparation for this year’s Hooked on Art exhibition, MAM reviewed dozens of Hook’s artworks and was impressed that while his subject matter ranged from realistic still life to abstract modern art, he often painted landscapes featuring the natural wonder of water. Inspired by Hook’s vision, MAM sought other unique images of water in the MAM Collection, and turned up treasures by Hook’s fellow art professors Aden Arnold and Jim Dew and Hook’s long time friend and gallery dealer, Lee Morrison. Other artists from the region like Louis Archambault (Helena), Bobbie McKibbin (Stevensville), Ronald Paulick (Great Falls), Wendy Thon (Kalispell) and Susan Barnes (formerly of Lolo) share Hook’s passion for the fluid landscape and carry it into contemporary art.
The free Hooked on Art event occurs at Bonner School on February 10, 10am - 4pm, and includes:
- Gallery talk with local artist, collector, and gallery owner Dudley Dana from 1:30 – 2:30.
- Art workshops for kids and adults.
- Display of local quilters' work.
- Food will be served by Bonner School students to benefit the Close Up program (students travel to Washington, D.C.).
