Collections and Digitization Intern

Missoula Art Museum (MAM) is an accredited contemporary art museum, serving Montana and the region since 1975. MAM was recently awarded grant funds from the Montana History Foundation to support the continued documentation of institutional history through the digitization of archival materials and the creation of digital records of collection objects. MAM seeks an intern to digitize archived institutional history and to create associated metadata.
The intern will scan historic records, edit images, and create both master digital files (TIFFs) and access and reference files (JPEGs and PDFs), and will create descriptive metadata for the digital surrogates. This internship reports to the registrar. This position may be ideal for a highly motivated undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in public history, archives, library science, museum studies, and art history, but student status is not required. Willing to work with students seeking internship credit.

Primary Responsibilities:
Digitization (scanning) of historic records, including image capture, image editing, creation of master and access files in accordance with MAM’s digitization plan.
Creation of descriptive metadata in accordance with MAM’s digitization plan.
Cataloging
Other relevant duties as assigned.
Learning Opportunities:
Intern will work closely with staff in a contemporary art museum.
Intern will learn to work with historic, primary sources.
Intern will learn to digitize historic records and create metadata that will allow for enhanced accessibility.
Intern will learn to work in a content management system (PastPerfect).
Skills and Abilities:
Proficient in Excel; familiar with Photoshop: image/photo editing
Exemplary organization, project, and time management skills
Ability to accurately manage files and tasks through verbal and written instructions
Commitment to an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment for visitors, volunteers, and employees of diverse backgrounds and needs
Strong communication skills to ask questions and seek support from supervisors.

May 18−August 7, 2026
Two days per week, five hours daily (10 hours per week, 120 hours total)
***There will be three, 12-week sessions with separate hiring periods. Other session dates: August 24−November 20, 2026, and January 11 - April 1, 2027.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Work is done in an office setting, involving interaction with museum colleagues, work with a computer and flatbed scanner, and working with historic textual records. Must be able to bend, reach, and lift a 30# box. Reasonable accommodation may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
