Intro To Coiled Basketry Technique

March 16

Teachers: Lily Luna Bennett
Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Time: 4:00 PM

Create a collaborative wall piece with other participants while learning the coiled basketry techniques using repurposed jeans denim. The finished project will be displayed in MAM's Lela Autio Education Gallery and participants will take home a detailed, illustrated tutorial so that they can make their own baskets or wall art using denim or other materials at home! Professional artist Lily Luna Bennett leads this workshop, which is inspired by the exhibition Mimi Jung: Just Between Us. Tour the exhibition and learn techniques while exploring the ways Jung approaches artmaking through form, space, and the use of unconventional materials.

Lily Luna Bennett

In Lily Luna Bennett’s University of Montana MFA thesis exhibition, Embody, she explores the effects that the current political climate has on our physical bodies and identities. As an interdisciplinary artist, Lily brings technical skills in sculpture to her passion for material exploration. From a twelve-foot-long recreation of the supreme court facade in all denim, to a wearable porcelain breast plate that is meticulously hand carved, you can see Bennett's’s dedication both to her subject matter and to her craft.

The exhibition's opening reception is Mar. 28, 5 to 7 PM, at the Gallery of Visual and Media arts on the University of Montana campus. The exhibition will be open until Apr. 18.
