Cid Wolstein, Artist Statement:

CID WOLSTEIN IS A LIFELONG ARTIST. AND FIERCELY INDEPENDENT.

HER ART-LIFE CYCLES: THROUGH THE BUILDING OF 3D CONSTRUCTIONS/ TO THE PRODUCTION OF ORIGINAL MUSIC/ TO PAINTING ART (WHICH IS THE PASSION). WHEREAS BUILDING AND MUSIC CAN SYNCHRONIZE WITH WORKING AS A HOUSEPAINTER—PAINTING ART REQUIRES UNINTERUPTED DESIGNATED STRETCHES OF TIME. IT’S ALL-ENCOMPASSING.

CID BEGAN AGAIN THE MARATHON PAINTING CYCLE IN DECEMBER OF 2022 AND SEES NO END IN SIGHT. THIS SHOW IS THE PRODUCT OF THAT COMPLETE DAILY DEVOTION.

PAINTING MATERIALS ARE PRIMARILY LATEX HOUSE PAINTS COLLECTED FOR DECADES: MOSTLY OFFBEAT MISMIX DISCOUNTED QUARTS AND GALLONS. ODD COLOR COMBOS ARE THE BEST. ACRYLICS HAVE NOW ENTERED.

PAINTINGS ARE DONE ON PAPER OR BOARD.

INK IS ESSENTIAL. ANY RIGID OBJECT THAT CAN BE DRAWN AROUND WORKS AS A COLOR CONTAINER OR TEMPLATE. HEAVY RELIANCE ON CIRCLES AND LINES/STRIPES.

AFTER PAINTING: THE SHAPES ARE REDRAWN. THE WHOLE PROCESS IS ABLE TO BE SEEN--- IF ONLY VAGUELY ---DUE TO BLEED-THROUGH AND THIN TOP-COVERAGE. SEE: PALIMPSEST.

PAINTING OVER OTHER PAINTINGS OR PACKAGING ALLOWS FOR SHOW-THROUGH. IF THE PAINTING IS LAME NO MATTER HOW MUCH TIME IT TOOK: PAINT OVER IT! THIS ALLOWS THE ORIGINAL TO STILL BE PARTIALLY SEEN. THERES A POINT AT WHICH IT IS RIGHT.

THE PAPERS ARE THEN MOUNTED ON BOARD. THEN FRAMED ALSO WITH CULLED LUMBER AND TRIMS. ALL IS PAINTED AS A WHOLE AND OVER-VARNISHED TO PROTECT.

COLOR IS KING. COLOR RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE MANIA. WORK INCLUDES LOTS OF VARIATIONS ON A THEME IN A SERIES. RECENTLY SHE STARTED PLASTERING OTHER PAINTINGS OVER THE MONOTONOUS WHOLE TO BREAK THE TRANCE.

THERE ARE NO RULES.

CID IS NOW OLD ENOUGH TO GO AHEAD AND LET HER ART OUT ON ITS OWN. MAM RESPONDED TO THE INTRODUCTION AND BENEVOLENTLY SET UP THIS SHOW. TOTAL THANKS TO CURATORS BRANDON REINTJES AND JOHN CALSBEEK, REGISTRAR MARGO GEDDES, AND MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS ANNA WILSON.

THIS ART IS FOR YOU WHO SEE IT.

THIS SHOW IS DEDICATED TO THE DECADES OF ART PATRONAGE BY:
