Several years ago, Missoula Art Museum's Senior Exhibitions Curator Stephen Glueckert was visiting the annual Native American Art Show in Great Falls, Montana, when he came across an approach to ledger art that he had never seen before. The artist was Dwayne Wilcox (Oglala/Lakota). Glueckert was struck by the originality of Wilcox's use of ledger paper as a platform for contemporary expression. Instead of the usual ledger art that portrayed the 19th century, romanticized warrior culture, Wilcox's work captured contemporary Indian life and made strong commentary using humor, satire, and irony.
